Basic principles of minimalism

Just like most of the people on this planet today, I feel extremely attached to my material possessions, and sometimes feel like I’m only working so I can buy more. The consumerism has reached new peaks in my life, determining me to feel anxious whenever I was entering my home, a place clustered with insignificant things, with little to no value.

I was kind of reluctant at the beginning regarding this concept, but the more I read about it, the more I got fascinated with what being happy is all about. It is not about possessing as much as you can, but it is about what you are, without these possessions.

Japanese people were amongst the first to adopt the basic principles of minimalism, getting rid of almost all their possessions, and remaining with the bare minimum necessities for a comfortable life. I have given this lifestyle a try for a month, and here is what I’ve discovered.

 

Personal style

Some of the most influential and richest persons in the world (including Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg) are easily recognized by their simple clothing choices. Jeans and shirts or turtlenecks have become the icons of a minimalist wardrobe, which comes with plenty of benefits. Giving up my full closet and adopting the same outfit day after day seemed like the toughest thing to do at the beginning, but it became extremely comforting after about a week. Knowing exactly what I’m going to wear the next day really released me from an unnecessary tension, and offered me more time to think about what truly matters. Diet

Have you ever thought about the amount of food you end up wasting at the end of the month because you’re unrealistic about your true alimentation needs? Based on my childhood experiences where diversified eating was more of a luxury, I found it quite easy to get rid of my old dietary habits, and adopt a minimalist approach for my lunch as well. The key idea is to try to become a more rational buyer, and only choose those foods that you know you will end up eating. If you want to make sure you only eat organic foods and still pay a small amount of money for it monthly, I suggest building and harvesting your own mini garden.

 

Interior design

It takes a great dose of courage and a bit of madness to get rid of most of the useless possessions surrounding you and crowding your apartment. I know, most of them preserve sweet emotions or sentimental value, but all of them are in the past. If you want a clear and productive mind, try getting rid of some of the objects that darken your soul and remind you every day of the past. After all, you only need a bed, a desk, and a closet.
