The history of the MBA

The MBA history has begun with one important date. The Dartmouth College (the State of New Hampshire, the USA) has appropriated the degree of Master of Business Administration to the graduates at the beginning of the XX century in 1901. At that time, it was actual, but is not as honorable as today. What is an MBA? Degree of MBA meant that the graduate of college was ready to work in the sphere of production and the market. Only in half a century, it became possible to receive a business education in Europe. The leading educational institutions of London and Manchester in Great Britain picked up the first wave. Other Europe “has ripened” much more lately.

Most of the first graduates of the MBA program have appeared in 1908 at business school of Harvard, which has been opened in 1906. Although, some historians believe that the beginning of the era of the MBA in the world put the year 1902, as this was happened when the Hannover Dartmouth College in New Hampshire (US) has produced specialists who have M.S.S. program (Master of Commercial Science) for the first time in history. This program was considered in something as MBA prototype. However, the historians consider this date the disputable and the inexact, so a starting point of education is taking an MBA in 1908.

Certainly, the mass of the schools, which have attributed themselves the business prefix, has opened on this wave. Time has shown, one of them offered a quality education, the rest have disappeared, but the real business school eventually transformed their programs in accordance with Western models. They have undergone testing for quality, having received the accreditation. Moreover, their diplomas cause respect in employers and guarantee if not the place in top management, then at least hot handshake of the president of the company that has interested you ,and big prospects on the future.

However, such education was costed very much. Therefore, many job seekers choose training at business schools that provide so-called “MBA pseudo” (junk-MBA). They do not conform to the standards, but were taught. They were cheaper and shorter; therefore enjoyed the popularity at the unaware or not too interested people.

If you are interested in the accredited MBA, contact the AACSB (The American assembly of business schools),AMBA (The Association of MBAs – Association of the educational institutions appropriating MBA degree) orEQUIS (European Quality Improvement System – the European system of improvement of quality). Today these organizations make accreditation of business schools and the MBA programs. You will find a maximum of reliable information about quality of this or that program of training of Masters of business administration there.

Still any training program for the last hundred years did not undergo so serious changes in such record-breaking short time. Moreover, each of them was dictated by needing to adapt to realities of time. The very first business program included the economic and accounting courses. The USA, at that time, needed those specialists because of financial instability in the state. It was similar to postgraduate study – it was possible to go for training directly upon termination of higher educational institutions. In addition, this approach together with the program was quickly picked up by other states.

However, at the same time, many very reputable higher education institutions of the United Stated refused flatly to include in the training the programs MBA rate because of prejudice that it was “shopkeeper’s”. It took the time that society was convinced of need of similar programs. But problems at MBA have not ended. In 1959, two reports that charged the MBA program of its availability have been published. Authors claimed that they shall not remind the rest houses, available to all where it was possible to spend time perfectly. We feel response and today – the business education became elite, has high requirements to extent of training of potential candidates.

In parallel with the tightening of the requirements for applicants of MBA schools, people began to pay more attention to researches. In this way they earned the favor of the representatives of academic education and incurred the wrath of representatives of business, which were needed not for the theorists-performers, but for the practice-oriented managers, ready for action.

What is MBA degree? Therefore, according to requirements of time, it was necessary to divide the program into two parts for business schools:

  • in the first year, the main disciplines were offered;
  • the second included the objects that were more specialized with the provision of an opportunity, learning to choose more suitable for its purposes.

It also became a process of forming of classical model of a rate of MBA. Modern business schools quite regularly should update materials for the programs not to lag behind the times. The latest trend has been necessary to add to the program the disciplines that were not previously used the scrutiny, but as practice has proved, it became the last tendency they are more important, than the right or finance. That is leadership, ethics, interpersonal and cross-cultural relations, etc. The MBA modern programs have provided not only “to pump up” the graduate the theory and practice, but also to develop him as the personality, having set the direction for his further growth.

The history of MBA in Europe

The First European country that has picked up a new trend in a business education is Great Britain. In England, in the 1960th years, in half of the century after the United States, based on the best universities, the first MBA schools of Europe have appeared in London and Manchester. Moreover, the idea of foundation of such elite schools got accustomed poorly – founders were accused that they copy the American standards and come off realities of own country. Now in half of the century, the London business school – is one of the acknowledged leaders of a business education of Europe.
It is necessary to notice that not all MBA schools in Europe have taken for themselves the American model. For example, IMD, Henley, INSEAD, and Ashridge were formed by group of companies that developed the management trainings for own employees. French business schools have created the support of the regional and local chambers of commerce.

The MBA of XXI century

By approximate calculations, in the USA, the diploma of MBA is held by every 250th inhabitant, i.e. the number of specialists of this qualification is more than one million. Annually, the several hundreds of thousands of students invest the millions of dollars in training. What can I do with an MBA? The MBA degree allows to begin a meteoric career, a large number of the world-class business leaders, who have graduated in due time from business schools, was already convinced of it: now they direct such companies as Ebey, Nike, the E-trade, the Motorola, Federal Reserve Bank and others. All of the school are proud of projects as the MBA Company and MBA Start.
